Construction on the new University of South Florida Health Morsani College of Medicine in downtown Tampa won't begin until August, but we now have an idea of what the new campus may look like. USF revealed renderings today of the nearly $153M facility.
The new location will be situated on a 1-acre lot on the corner of Channelside Drive and Meridian Ave. The new Channelside location will put medical school students closer to Tampa General Hospital, USF Health's primary teaching hospital, as well as the USF Health Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS). The new building, slated to wrap up construction in 2019, will house both the Morsani College of Medicine and USF Heart Health Institute.
The downtown Tampa campus has already elevated USF in the eyes of prospective med students. Applications have increased 170% since the new campus was announced. USF has also recruited 12 of 31 cardiovascular scientists.
“Co-locating our medical school and heart institute in the vibrant urban area of Tampa will attract more top-tier students and cardiovascular researchers, and energize our intent to bring more biotechnology, biomedical and pharmaceutical firms to this region," Judy Genshaft, president of the USF system.
